Description
The "TaPrEC+mBot Workshops” are a set of workshops aimed to investigate creative learning with preschool children through tangible programming. These workshops are part of the Socioenactive Systems FAPESP Thematic Project #2015/16528-0. The Socioenactive Systems Project is approved by the Unicamp Ethical Committee under the number CAAE 72413817.3.0000.5404.

This dataset contains source code of the TaPrEC+mBot environment, photos of the environment and a image of its architecture. Also, description and planning documents, a anonymized transcription, and anonymized photos of the “TaPrEC+mBot Workshops”.

Photo of the programming blocks (component of the TaPrEC+mBot environment). These programming blocks were adapted by preschool teachers. The teachers suggested to use the following programming blocks: i) forward, backward, turn left, and turn right and ii) change the color of the programming blocks so that children could easily differentiate between them. The new colors were: green, pink, black and white to the movements: backward, forward, turn left and turn right respectively.

Image of the TaPrEC+mBot's architecture. As shown in the image, the tangible program information is entered into the TaPrEC+mBot environment through the RFID reader. When the user passes the RFID reader over each programming block, the identifiers of the RFID tags are sent to the control program. The control program verifies if they exist in the list of RFID identifiers, and it sends them to the processing queue. Then, the control program sends to mBot, via Bluetooth, the Scratch commands associated with each RFID identifier. Finally, mBot executes the sequence of commands received in the physical world.

Photo of the TaPrEC+mBot environment. TaPrEC+mBot is a tangible programming environment designed to provide children with an engaging introduction to computer programming. As show in the image, it consists of four parts: i) hardware: notebook and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system (tag and reader), ii) programming blocks which is a set of colored pieces of puzzle-like wooden blocks containing an RFID tag on one side and an embossed symbol on the other, iii) mBot, a robot car that we used to represent the physical output of tangible programs and iv) software: a control program that we developed in the mBlock, a Scratch-based programming software tool, to allow communication via Bluetooth between the programming blocks and the mBot.
